View from the wheel

Visitor Jack Muir, also aiming to get a teddy bear, said it was very difficult to win the games. "Some are actually impossible to win, just like the one which needs you to toss a ring on the bottle," Muir said.

Secretary Cat Lee Sze-man shared a similar view. "The games have too many regulations comparing with the previous carnivals. It's very difficult to win," she said.

Yet, Kwong Kin-tat, 32, said he played the games merely for fun. ˇ§I only enjoy the process. It doesnˇ¦t matter whether I can get any prize or not.ˇ¨ Holding a Mickey Mouse toy in his hand, he said: ˇ§I didnˇ¦t expect I could get anything when I shot corks at the stack of metal tubes. I just got it (the prize) with luck.ˇ¨
Sales manager Poon Tsz-on, 29, meanwhile, won the games for his girlfriend. ˇ§My girlfriend wanted (the soft toy of) Winnie the Pooh so much that I promised to get her one,ˇ¨ he said. ˇ§Itˇ¦s cheaper to spend the tokens here on the toy than buying it outside the fair.ˇ¨

His girlfriend, Coey Wong Wing-suet, 25, said: ˇ§If I come here without my boyfriend, I can get nothing. Iˇ¦m sure.ˇ¨ Poon nodded his head, holding Winnie the Pooh in his hands. Wong said some of the games needed physical strength, like Hi Strikers and Basketball games, which girls could hardly win.
The soon-to-be-married couple also posed for photographs under the big wheel to mark their occasion of having been together for 500 days. ˇ§We come to the fair to celebrate our special day and we have taken many pictures,ˇ¨ Wong said. She described the carnival as a romantic place ˇ§excellent for loversˇ¨.

The fair is also a place for friendsˇ¦ gathering. Wong said she would visit the carnival again with her friends two weeks later. ˇ§I need to come here again for the G-force and Top Buzz, which my boyfriend doesnˇ¦t like,ˇ¨ she said.

A family of three from Shanghai said they were having a great time at the fair too. The father, Lee Zhi, said although he spent an extra HK$200 on buying the tokens, it was worthwhile as his five-year-old child enjoyed playing the games.

Lee said that his son spent about half an hour hooking the ducks and another half in playing the ball-throwing games. ˇ§Though sometimes we just stand beside him watching, we have fun as we can take pictures of his lovely face,ˇ¨ Lee said.

He added that the World Carnival in Hong Kong was expensive, but it was more enjoyable than the one they went in Shanghai.

ˇ§Perhaps, the waterfront view makes the carnival more special and impressive than the others,ˇ¨ he said.
