Alan Tang

The Prince
Alan Tang Kwong Wing was a famous actor in the ‘70s. He first appeared onscreen in 1966 in the film The Student Prince when he was still a secondary school student. As a result, he was nicknamed The Prince. However, he did not go straight into movies after graduation. Instead, he became a teacher in Sun Fat College, teaching Chinese history.

In 1968, he signed a contract with a movie company and started his acting career. In 1973, he went behind the screen to be a producer and invested in his first film. Now Mr. Tang is a businessman and still invests in movies production. The Days of Being Wild was one of his productions. The film won several awards in various international film festivals.


Q: When did you develop your interest in acting?

A: When I was in secondary school, I was active in playing dramas and I participated in many drama competitions and performances.

Q: How do you look at movies?

A: I treat movie as an artwork before it is completed, but afterwards, it becomes a commercial product to me.

Q: When you make your investment decision, how do you achieve balance between profit and art?

A: Sometimes, I invest in movies that I am interested in and soley pursue the artistic value, disregarding the budget. The Days of Being Wild is an example.

Q: What prompts you to be a producer?

A: A qualified and responsible producer should be very knowledgeable in movie making, as he is the one who masters the whole process of production.

Q: Are you still interested in movie production?
A: Yes, movies brought me a sense of achievement. I am happy that people in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia watch the movies that are produced by me.

Q: What do you think is the key to success?

A: Will power and concentration. When you have determined to do something, just commit yourself and do to it.
