The Third Encounter

The mysterious "X-file"

By Sophia Wong

Imagine that you saw a plate-like glowing object floating in the sky. With a flash, it disappeared.

This was not a scene from the X-files, it was the experience of Miss Moon Fong Chun Mun, the president of Hong Kong UFO Club.

UFOs, or Unidentified Flying Objects, are regarded as spacecraft from outer space. Their popularity has led to the rise of UFOlogy -- the study of UFOs and aliens.

"It is already meaningless to argue whether UFO and aliens exist or not," Miss Fong said, "UFOs and E.T. are not fantasies, they do exist."

In 1993, Miss Fong travelled to 20 countries to visit some UFO hotspots. She claimed that she witnessed a flying saucer in the sky when she was in New Mexico.

She described, "It looked like an eagle gliding in the sky and it suddenly disappeared in a few seconds."

According to Miss Fong, there were plenty of photos, eye witness reports and official researches done by governments to support her belief in UFOs.

She herself has also interviewed over 50 witnesses of UFOs.

In order to spread her belief among the general public, Miss Fong founded the Hong Kong UFO Club in 1996, which she claimed to have about 400 members from all walks of life.

In addition, she has organized some forums and talks on this issue.

Said she: "I hope these activities can generate greater public concern and acceptance of the existence of extraterrestrial organisms."

"We should study UFOlogy from the perspectives of science, religion and philosophy. This is an educational programme for humanity," concluded Miss Fong.

Dr. Tso Wung Wai is a well-known local scientist who has great interest in UFO issues.

"The size of our universe is an infinity. Human beings know only little about it. Thus, we cannot eliminate the possibility of the existence of other organisms in outer space," he said.

Dr. Tso believes that theoretically, there maybe some planets which are in the same stage, or in an even higher level of evolution than the Earth.

However, he thinks that it is still "unfavourable and unreliable" to believe in the so-called evidence of UFOs at the moment."

Said he: "Until now, no interaction nor communication between humans and any living organisms beyond our planet is shown.

"With today's technology, it is now possible to create such photographs, and most of them are controversial indeed."

On the other hand, the encounters with UFOs by the witnesses could be merely due to psychological effects or illusions, according to Dr. Tso.

As for those "official" documents and researches, he said that they were only assignments or essays, but not scientific journals that could be counted on.

Moreover, while some people are truly interested in the study of UFOs, others just want to make a fortune out of it.

"The mystery of E.T. makes it a profitable business.

"Books and films about aliens can make big money. It is a trend to talk about E.T. and UFOs as most people, especially the youth, regard the topic interesting," said Dr. Tso.

He suggested people to handle information about UFOs in the mass media carefully, because not all of them are true.

"Anything unexplainable is untrustable.
We should develop the ability to discern what we see and
verify them from different angles.
Otherwise, you will never know the truth!"
