{"id":12122,"date":"2018-03-03T22:04:41","date_gmt":"2018-03-03T14:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/varsity.com.cuhk.edu.hk\/?p=12122"},"modified":"2018-03-03T22:04:41","modified_gmt":"2018-03-03T14:04:41","slug":"hk-island-byelection-legco-ng-dick-hay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/varsity.com.cuhk.edu.hk\/index.php\/2018\/03\/hk-island-byelection-legco-ng-dick-hay\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-government activist Ng Dick-hay standing in HK Island LegCo By-election to change negative image of Beijing supporters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Gloria Li<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dropcap2 dropcap\">N<\/span>g Dick-hay, a former spokesman of the pro-establishment and anti-Occupy Movement Defend Hong Kong Campaign says he\u2019s standing in the legislative council by-election in Hong Kong Island in order to change what he describes as people\u2019s \u201csuperficial\u201d and \u201cbiased\u201d perceptions of those who support the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel that the image of those organizations and individuals who identify themselves as Chinese isn\u2019t very distinctive in Hong Kong.\u201d says the 52 year-old IT business owner. \u201cI want to make the public to have a more positive understanding of this group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ng actively comments on politics, publishing online articles and is a regular caller to radio phone-in programmes. He thinks election forums in recent years have been increasingly dull and believes he can lift the quality of debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He adds that by staying unaffiliated, he can express his views more freely. \u201cI do not accept donations from any organizations or people, so I can maintain my freedom of speech and voice more distinctive opinions,\u201d says Ng.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to his proud assertion of his Chinese identity, opposition to Hong Kong independence is Ng\u2019s most distinctive standpoint. Ng says he conducted a poll two years ago which found that 18 per cent of his respondents\u00a0supported independence, with the majority of them aged 30 years and below. This got him worried that over time, Hong Kong independence will become a mainstream ideology in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this vein, he thinks the disqualification of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demosist\u014d\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agnes Chow Ting from standing in the by-election is a good move. He says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demosist\u014d\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advocacy of \u201cself-determination\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involves dissociation from the Chinese nation which is unacceptable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDisqualification gives a signal that if people want to be involved in politics, they cannot move towards independence,\u201d says Ng. \u201cAs Chinese, this is the bottom line. We cannot give in anymore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his pro-Beijing views, Ng doesn\u2019t see himself as a member of the pro-establishment camp. He says on some issues, such as urban planning, he has more in common with the pro-democracy camp. Without a political party, campaign team or funds, Ng knows it is almost impossible for him to win the by-election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is already quite satisfactory if I can get more than 10,000 votes as a first-time candidate,\u201d he says. \u201cThen I can get back my HK$ 50,000 election deposit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other candidates in the Hong Kong Island constituency in the 2018 Legislative Council By-election are Au Nok-Hin, Judy Chan Ka-pui and Edward Yum Liang-Hsien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Edited by Katie Cheng<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ng Dick-hay is a former spokesman of a pro-government activist group but says he&#8217;s standing as an independent so he can express his views freely.
