That&#8217;s quite unique.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gay Games has only been held in western countries since it was founded.&nbsp;Philipse had an idea of bringing the Gay Games to Hong Kong in 2014. Photo courtesy: Dennis Philipse.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with a team of 15 people and 40 volunteers in the campaign, Philipse spent six months preparing a 300-page bid proposal and a presentation to convince the game committee that Hong Kong was the perfect candidate to host the game.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hong Kong beat 10 strong competitors, including Washington DC and San Francisco, and won the bid to host the Gay Games 2022. The biggest difficulty Philipse and his team faced was to explain the event to the public. \u201cPeople have no idea about how big it is and how important this is for Hong Kong,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The successful story is actually closely related to an LGBTQ community he founded and his love for outdoor activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Set up an LGBTQ Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philipse observes that many people do not like mingling with friends in clubs or bars. He opened&nbsp;a Facebook page &#8211; Out in HK in 2014 and began organising sports activities with his friends every week from then on with connection he made on social media platforms. Out in HK is a community for everybody to join. It\u2019s more visible,&#8221; says Philipse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes that sports can help people keep fit and build connections. Photo courtesy: Dennis Philipse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Out in Hong Kong is now one of the biggest LGBTQ communities in Hong Kong with more than 6000 members. Philipse&nbsp;incubated the&nbsp;organizing team of Gay Games 2022 through this group and is using it as an important platform for promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s nice to bring people together,\u201d Philipse says, \u201cPeople who come the first time for the events like this and they keep coming. It&#8217;s really important.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philipse believes that playing sports is important for physical and mental health.&nbsp;He embraces challenges by participating in Hong Kong 100 Ultra Trail Race, a 100km trail running challenge in Hong Kong, twice and completing the race once in 22 hours. \u201cIf you run for a long time like 24 hours, you are on your own,\u201d he says, \u201cIt\u2019s a mental game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cIf you run for a long time like 24 hours, you are on your own. It\u2019s a mental game.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get Ready for 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gay Games 2022 is still in \u201cthe developing stage\u201d. Philipse and his teammates&nbsp;have deployed multiple media channels to promote it in Asia.
