Some long established fan clubs of experienced artists have existed for decades. In some cases, fan clubs still exist even though the idol has died.

The Bruce Lee Club (Hong Kong) was formed in 1995. Several Bruce Lee super-fans organised it on a voluntary basis.

Mr. Trevor Tang, a committee member of the club, was one of the early organisers. He became a Bruce Lee fan when he was about 11.

Mr. Tang said, “There are many Bruce Lee fan clubs over the world, but there was none in Hong Kong.

“Hong Kong is the place where Bruce Lee grew up, but we could not find any fan club for him. This urged us to form the Bruce Lee Club (Hong Kong).

“We promote Bruce Lee’s philosophy. In Hong Kong, most people only know about Bruce Lee’s kung fu, but few of them know about his thinking,” added Mr. Tang.

Mr. Brandon Chiang, a 18-year-old tourism student at the Haking Wong Technical Institute, is the member of the Bruce Lee Club (Hong Kong).

He also promotes the philosophy of Bruce Lee.

“I joined the club and help in the exhibitions because I like Bruce Lee. It is all because of my fondness towards him that I contribute so much,” said Mr. Chiang.

Mr. Tang said that Bruce Lee is not only a movie star, but also a traditional martial arts expert and philosopher.

“There are many things that I can learn from Bruce Lee. Even if I spent my whole life at this, I would not learn all these things.

“As I become more familiar with the story of Bruce Lee, I admire him very much. He tried his best in every aspect. For example, he once won the open championship of cha-cha in Hong Kong,” said Mr. Tang.

Mr. Chiang also feels that after knowing much about Bruce Lee, one will still find it charming to discover other things about Bruce Lee.

“Through the process of discovering, one can know the personality of Bruce Lee, such as his high demands on himself.

“So far, I still cannot find anyone else whose charm can be compared with Bruce Lee’s. Bruce Lee is really very outstanding. “As I have found the best idol, I don’t think I need to choose anyone else,” said Mr. Chiang.

 

Gatherings with Adam Cheng are still held from time to time.

Another example of a longlasting fan clubs is Adam Cheung’s fan club. The fans of Mr. Cheng Siu Chow, an experienced singer and actor, formed the Adam Cheng’s Fan Club 21 years ago on a voluntary basis.

Miss Pat Chan, the chair of the club, joined the club when it was first established.

As for the motivation for organising activities of the fan club, Miss Chan said that it is due to Adam’s attraction.

“I think Adam is nice. His contribution to show business has been great. This keeps his attraction for many years. That is also why I have supported the club for so many years,” said Miss Chan.

“I like the feeling of supporting the same idol with the others. I feel happy when I stick together with other fans.

“When I meet someone who also likes Adam, I feel especially happy,” added Miss Chan.

Miss Alice Chan, a committee member for the club, also said that she feels delighted when she is together with other fans.

“We hope to agglomerate power to support Adam. Organising gatherings for the fan club is the best way to do so,” said Miss Chan.

Mr. Mui Hon Wah has been a member of the Adam Cheng’s Fan Club for 18 years.

Said Mr. Mui: “Adam is hard working. He needs our support. Indeed we do so many things just aimed at supporting him.

“I think our support will motivate Adam to be more diligent in pursuing his career.”

Nowadays some fans express their loyalty to idols by means of screaming and holding large banners. But some fans of experienced artists show their loyalty over time.

The Adam Cheng’s Fan Club chair, Miss Chan, said that she never thought of giving up supporting Adam Cheng and his fan club.

“Even sometimes if I am too busy, I will only think about organising less gatherings for the club, but I have never thought of giving up,” said she.

According to the fans of Adam Cheung, he is not only hard working but also sincere. “

Adam has never shown any haughtiness to us. So we have become close friends with Adam as time goes by,” said Miss Chan.

The chair, Miss Chan, the committee member, Miss Chan, and Mr. Mui all agreed that as time goes by, instead of the usual idol-fan relationship, Adam Cheng and they have become much more familiar and closer with each other.

This strengthens their ties with the fan club and Adam Cheng. It also explains why they have been so loyal to Adam Cheng for about 20 years.

The members' activities are not restricted to idol worship. Instead, they serve society. “We never notify any press about these activities as we do not want to use them as a chance for promotion,” said Miss Chan. Nowadays, the old established fan clubs are different in nature from those of pop stars. While in the past fan clubs were formed on voluntary basis, now fan clubs are mostly formed by agents or record companies. Fans pay fees for membership. In return they get benefits like news about their idols and free tickets. Miss Jamie Yu, a 19-year-old hotel management student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, is a member of the Eason Chan’s Fan Club. According to Miss Yu, the activities held by the club tend to be more entertaining. The fans go together to watch performances by Eason Chan. Miss Yu said that she joined the Eason Chan’s Fan club because she hopes she can have more chances to meet Eason Chan in different activities. However, Miss Yu said that many things keep her away from the club. “Sometimes when Eason is abroad or when I am busy with school, there is much less contact between me and other club members. “Eason has just signed a new contract with another company, so a new fan club will be formed. As a result, no gathering was held recently,” said Miss Yu.
