Results
The
sexual attitudes, knowledge and behaviors of Hong Kong students
In March
2002, The Hong Kong Tertiary Institutions Health Care Working Group
commissioned the Quality Evaluation Center of City University of Hong
Kong to conduct a survey on the sexual attitudes, knowledge and behaviors
of students in tertiary education. The results were released on 20 December
2002.
The
survey was conducted through email. A total number of 11,228 unmarried
full-time college students responded to the survey.
Most of
the respondents were aged 18 to 23. The male to female ratio was 4 to
6.
Results
of the survey are summarized below:
- 34.4 percent of the respondents, including 39 percent of males and
31 percent of females, have had sexual experience.
- 38.1 percent had more than one sex partner and 4.5 percent had more
than five.
- 6.4 percent have had sex with new acquaintances, and 3.3 percent
have had sex with prostitutes.
- 21.5 percent have had sex involuntarily, 7.7 percent had sex under
the influence of alcohol and 0.7 percent reported being raped.
- 4.7
percent had unintentional pregnancies, 4.2 percent induced abortion,
1.4 percent were infected with venereal diseases and 0.2 percent had
AIDS.
- 10.9 percent did not use any contraceptive measures.
- 64.7 percent used condoms, and 13.2 percent practised coitus interruptus,
which is ejaculation outside the female body.
- 60.2 percent took safety precautions in every sexual intercourse.
- 24.2 percent did not use any safety measures to protect themselves
against venereal diseases, including AIDS.
