Food and Drink Shopping in bread boutiques "I like the wooden milk bread with its slightly sweet and crispy crust and the milky cream inside," said Kris Cheung Hau-man, a university student. "The wooden milk bread does not taste greasy. But it really looks like a chopped tree trunk in shape," Cheung said. The bakery's Bavarian dark rye bread is also hit. "I like rye bread since it is healthier than other kinds of bread that contain cream and different streusel toppings," said customer Jennifer Smith, who is a marketing executive. Rye bread is brown in colour with grains on top and a crust that looks like the earth in appearance. To health-conscious customers, they pay attention not only to the texture and flavour of the bread, but also the ingredients as well as the content of butter and oil when they shop for the loaves and buns. According to BreadTalk, premium brands of butter and olive oil are used in the baking process since they are healthier and can give a finer texture to the bread. Bread is rich in carbohydrate, but the content of dietary fibre varies in different kinds of bread, the expert said. "Whole-grain bread is more nutritious than refined grain bread," Cheung said. She explained that in making refined grain loaves, dietary fibre and some vitamins were removed in order to give a finer texture and improve the shelf life. However, people cannot slim down by simply substituting bread for rice in their meals because two slices of plain bread already contain 240 calories, which is equal to that of a bowl of rice, she added. |
