The host of happiness

"I was a bit upset when I got the news at the beginning. But after the Soft Hard Kids called me, I felt bad and was sorry to have thought in that way. I haven't considered their reasons behind. I should not have inflated my ego," he said.

Viewing oneself as too important could hinder progress and leave one with unhappiness, he added.

To spread the message of happiness, Mr Chan said he always tried to bring joy to the people around him. "I will be happier to see them happy, and I will have more confidence in my work," Mr Chan said with a dimpled smile.

But leading TVB is not an easy task. The general manager said it was like managing both "a big family" and "a big elephant". "It's powerful when all the family members unite as one," he said, but adding that it could be like an unwieldy elephant that required a lot of effort to make it move.

Mr Chan said he spent a lot of time on communication with his colleagues, not only through meetings and conferences, but also through casual chats. "I won't take myself as their supervisor. I treat them as my equals," he said.

"All misunderstandings stem from the absence of communication," he continued.

However, having enthusiasm for work and being happy are the most important of all. "To get a job done, passion is the key. You will be active in doing your work if you have passion, which makes you happy," Mr Chan said. "Always remember to be cheerful and face the problems positively."
