Resplendent new year

Photo and text by Florence Cheng

Every year at Christmas and New Year, the Pearl of the Orient is decorated with colourful lightings. The lightings sparkle at night, making the whole city twinkle with jewelleries.

People may appreciate such beautiful lightings for a few days. However, in fact, the preparation work for the displays proceeds as early as in October. Open spaces such as the ones near Mongkok and Kowloon Kowloon Canton Railway stations are convenient working locations. From designing, pattern-making, installing to testing, craftsmen have to work for a hundred days, just to add festive mood to the city.

This year, when you enjoy the festive joy brought by these pretty lightings, try also to appreciate the efforts the craftsmen have devoted.

Above and below: The Christmas lighting displays in Tsim Sha Tsui East add color and give lives to the city night view.

Right: Most workers say that to tie the plastic tubes onto the wire nettings i s the most difficult and time-consuming part of the work.
