The government is taking away the land along the Eastern Campus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong to develop Tolo Highway, the Science Park and the entrance to the Science Park.

The Marine Science Laboratory, the Water Sports Center, the transport depot and the garbage collection depot have to move.

As the new Marine Science Laboratory on the reclaimed land has not been built, the Water Sports Center cannot be moved to the site of the old laboratory, which is where it eventually is situated.

The government is promising to provide a new water sports center and laboratory, fully equipped, in exchange for taking the land from the University.

The president of the Canoeing Club, Mr. Yeung Tsun Yue, said that the planning of activities was hindered.

Usually they canoe to Wu Kai Sha to have more space and clearer water.

Now there are more barges that deliver reclamation materials to the site so they need to be more careful when planning the route.

Prof. Ian H. Wilson, head of the Staff Boat Club, which is for staff members of the University, said that the construction was disruptive.

Club activities include fishing and cruises.

He did not think the construction work would be a great disincentive as far as sailing was concerned.

“Ships make it even more interesting as we can sail around them,” he said.

Mr. Paul Cuthbert, supervisor of the Water Sports Center, thinks that the impact of the construction on water safety is minimal.

He said that the Environmental Protection Department and the Agricultural and Fisheries Department always monitor the water quality.

Mr. Chu Ku Ho of the Student Sailing Club and Prof. Wilson think there has been no significant change in water quality.

However, Mr. Yeung of the Canoeing Club said that there has been more oil on the water since construction began.
