Bowie: A tough army jeep

By Timothy Ser

Bowie Lam entered showbiz 10 years ago. He is self-conscious, reasonably nice, never too friendly, but still easy going.

Bowie is a pop television actor who has shot 21 drama series since 1991. Not many people know that he used to be a policeman — or that he released three albums before 1992.

After 9 long years, Bowie finally released his fourth album in February 2001.

Hummer

“I’m just like a ‘Hummer’ (a U.S. army jeep). It can overcome all obstacles,” said Bowie, who loves cars very much.

He said his life was indeed very tough compared to the lives of other actors.

“I have never been formally trained or taught in acting,” he said.

He sought senior actors’ advice. When he worked with Yip Tak Han in her album production, she became one of his advisers.

Once he asked Yip how to act. Yip told him to list 10 ways of acting and choose the best way.

“I realised I should learn on my own rather than relying on others. In this way, I have improved a lot,” said he.

Yet he said he still has room for improvement despite others’ appreciation of his acting.

But he has one motto.

“I believed in no one but myself to strive for my achievements.”

He repeated this motto at least 10 times throughout this interview.

His music

He wants to produce his own music with the greatest freedom.

“I’m contented with the latest album since my company gave me a lot of room to produce the music I like,” he said.

When someone suggested that he better add a line to make a song more appealing, he refused.

“It is my song,” he said. “Simply put it aside if you don’t like it, but please don’t change my originality.”

Asked about negative comments from music critics on his latest album, he waxed moody.

“If these criticisms are made by Mr. Chan Siu Po or Mr. Chan Fai Hung, I think that is all right,” said he.

“But if they are made by someone else, then please ask him to read the names of the producers on my album.

“They are all well-known and qualified producers in the industry,” said he.

“If they think they are all right, I don’t think my album should have any problems.”

During this interview, a photographer took nearly 40 pictures and none of them caught Bowie smiling.

Himself

He is very self-confident, but also very self-conscious.

When the photographer tried to take pictures of him speaking, he stopped and asked when and what the photographer would take.

Asked whether he needed much time to do make-up and to dress up before going out, he said, “One hour at least, but I don’t think that is a long time.

“I am Bowie, who is expected to be neat and tidy,” said he.

“I have a lot of sweaters like LMF (Lazy Mutha Fucka) has. But I am Bowie. I cannot wear that.”

His future

Asked what he would do after retiring from showbiz, he said, “Never think of about this.”

He said that he never plans for the distant future.

“The next plan? I prefer buying a car,” said he.

After all, this tough army jeep has to continue his journey.
