People On and off screen "I don't regard (this) as sacrifice because it helps me familiarise myself with the character and remove the hindrance of my appearance to act," she said. Miss Lam agreed that her image was inconsistent with the characters she played, but she said she enjoyed it because it surprised the audience and turned their attention to her performance. "I would not take the role if there is no difficulty in playing. If I played ingenues or sweetie-pies all the time, it would be very boring. Then, what's the point of acting?" she asked. Despite being awarded for her performance many times, Miss Lam said getting the honours was not her purpose of acting. "Awards recognise people's hard work in the movie industry. But if you don't have one, it doesn't mean you are the worst actress," she said. The starlet career has not only given Miss Lam honours and fame, as the playing of other people's stories on screen has also taught the actress lessons about life. Miss Lam said she used to see things only as black and white. But after years of fathoming the traits and backgrounds of the movie characters, she realised that there were always "grey areas" in between and every person had his own story. "I now keep an open heart when looking into a matter," she said. The busy shooting schedule has also made Miss Lam realise the need to have time to rest and think. "To digest what I have learned and make self-evaluation is quite important," she said. The actress, who used to like boisterous atmosphere and hanging out with friends, said she now enjoyed staying at home more. "I enjoy peace and quietness at home and have a whale of a time wearing pyjamas and doing things," she said. Cherishing the moments to be alone, she now enjoys her life by doing flower arrangement, cooking and taking photos. "I do not always stay in Hong Kong. I once thought it was very hard to keep flowers at home and they would need time to be taken care of, too," she said. "But now I want to have flowers at home after I have learnt flower arrangement.
