Letters to the Editor

Interesting phenomenon

Lots of parents, teachers and students are worried that students’ language standard are declining. I got more insight on this topic after attending a talk.
The lecturer showed us a past HKCEE report revealing that the standard of students was not as good as in the previous year. Actually, we hear similar comments every year. Shall we then conclude that standard of students has really dropped as years passed by? If it’s true, how can we explain the progress of society all these years? Can people of lower quality create a better society?
The answer I got is that it’s the increased demand of high-quality graduates that create the illusion. Though the number of university graduates increases, the supply of top students are similar, giving us a feeling that standard of students has declined.
Whether or not this is the real situation, this viewpoint should be considered when we think about this matter.
