February 1999 From the EditorWomen
I dare say most women cannot confidently stand naked in front
of mirrors. Some are discontented with their natural body contours, some even feel guilty
and ashamed of their shapes. Have they done anything wrong?
NO.
Women are bombarded to be "beautiful"--defined in terms of today's
standard--absolutely fat-free but with over-sized lips, breasts and hips. Being "slim" brings
women "love" from the opposite sex and recognition from their peers. They are unconsciously
socialized to feel that they are destined to look pretty and cute to entertain men sexually and
socially, and to be their free and loyal maids.
This sounds outrageously radical, but is brutally true even though
we are approaching the next millennium. Men are not the only culprits, women should also share
the blame too. Some of them willingly accept being men's puppets. Male domination has been the
tradition for centuries and it is difficult for both genders to change it.
Can't we have an "unconventional" interpretation of beauty?
Being fat is not a sin. A woman with flat breasts and small hips can
be beautiful too, as long as she has her own character.
