Portrayal of drama

I was deeply impressed by the contestants of the Inter-Collegiate Drama Competition at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in November. I very much appreciated the magnificent stage production by the four colleges. Although there were many technical constraints at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall, most of the competitors made the best use of the stage to portray their messages. All of them should be congratulated.
However, a friend of mine who has been working for a long time commented that many university students tend to talk too much about “grand issues”, such as the meaning of life, etc. He said in fact comparatively “trivial” stuff like the problems students face on campus or in a romantic relationship could also be attractive to the audience. I am not sure whether what he said is correct, but it does indicate that student writers may sometimes be too ambitious in expressing all their viewpoints in a short play. Unfortunately the audience may not be able to understand all the depictions in the story.
By the way, as an enthusiast in drama, I would like to see more stories about students’ drama productions in Varsity. It would be interesting to see the scenes behind the stage.
