The increased visibility of the LGBT community has led more people to support anti-discrimination legislation against sexual minorities, but is society really more accepting of sexual minorities? Varsity looks into the hostility they still face despite their increased exposure.
Then presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen’s public support for same-sex marriage last year turned it into an election issue in the recent polls. Tsai has since been elected as the island’s first woman president but as Varsity learns, resistance and inertia still hinders progress towards marriage equality legislation.
The traditional view of sex education in schools focuses on avoiding unplanned pregnancies and abstinence. But many young people, educators, public health experts and social workers increasingly believe it should also cover topics such as safe sex, sexuality, sexual orientation and self-esteem. Ironically the flexibility given to schools on how the teach sex education may be a hindrance to an open discussion of these issues.
